Between Germany and Russia<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>presented by curators Piotr Bernatowicz and Dariusz Kar\u0142owicz, featuring Ignacy Czwartos<\/strong>, to be shown at the Polish Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition in Venice (La Biennale di Venezia) in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The first stage of the competition for a curatorial project of the exhibition in the Polish Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition in Venice took place on 11\u00a0July\u00a02023 at Zach\u0119ta \u2014 National Gallery of Art. The deliberations concluded with the following statement of the Jury:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018On 11\u00a0July\u00a02023, deliberations of the first stage of the competition for a curatorial project of the exhibition in the Polish Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition in Venice in 2024 took place. The Jury has selected the following projects for the second stage of the competition:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Polish Practice in Tragedy. Between Germany and Russia<\/em>, artist: Ignacy Czwartos, curators: Piotr Bernatowicz, Dariusz Kar\u0142owicz. Ref.: JK1656<\/li>\n<li><em>OWN<\/em>, project team: Aleksandra Kot, Wies\u0142aw Bartkowski, Klementyna Jankiewicz, curator: Alicja G\u0142uszek. The deliberations concluded with the following statement of the Jury:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018On 18\u00a0September 2023, the jury of the competition for the design of the exhibition in the Polish Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition in Venice in 2024 held its meeting at Zach\u0119ta \u2014 National Gallery of Art. The Jury, appointed by Professor Piotr Gli\u0144ski, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, included: El\u017cbieta Banecka, Andrzej Biernacki (absent during the first stage deliberations), Tadeusz Boruta, Jaros\u0142aw Denisiuk, Jagna Dom\u017calska, Janusz Janowski, Janusz Kapusta, Agnieszka Komar-Morawska, Lech Majewski (absent during the second stage deliberations), Zbigniew Makarewicz, Maciej Mazurek, Kazimierz Nowosielski, Urszula \u015awi\u0119cicka, Joanna Warsza and Karolina Zi\u0119bi\u0144ska-Lewandowska.<\/p>\n<p>After reviewing the submissions and after long and in-depth discussion, the Jury, in an open vote, selected the project for the exhibition of works by Ignacy Czwartos, <em>Polish Practice in Tragedy. International Art Exhibition is financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">In accordance with the provisions of the competition rules, all projects submitted to the competition are made public in the form chosen by the organiser. Exhibition concepts and scenario summaries of all projects are made available, while full scenarios with visualisations are available only with additional consent from the team members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Documentation of the projects shortlisted for the second stage is published in whole, excluding the cost estimates.<\/span><\/p>\n","competition_curator":"<p><strong>\u2018Stranieri Ovunque\u2019 &#8211; \u2018Foreigners Everywhere\u2019<\/strong>, the title of the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, is drawn from a series of works started in 2004 by the Paris-born and Palermo-based collective Claire Fontaine. The works consist of neon sculptures in different colours that render in a growing number of languages the words \u201cForeigners Everywhere\u201d. The phrase comes, in turn, from the name of a Turin collective who fought racism and xenophobia in Italy in the early 2000s: Stranieri Ovunque.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ADRIANO PEDROSA&#8217;S STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the curatorial statement Adriano Pedrosa wrote: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018The backdrop for the work is a world rife with multiple crises concerning the movement and existence of people across countries, nations, territories and borders, which reflect the perils and pitfalls of language, translation and ethnicity, expressing differences and disparities conditioned by identity, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, wealth, and freedom. In this landscape, the phrase <em>Foreigners Everywhere<\/em> has (at least) a dual meaning. First of all, that wherever you go and wherever you are you will always encounter foreigners\u2014they\/we are everywhere. Secondly, that no matter where you find yourself, you are always, truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018(\u2026) The Biennale Arte 2024 will focus on artists who are themselves foreigners, immigrants, expatriates, diasporic, \u00e9migr\u00e9s, exiled, and refugees\u2014especially those who have moved between the Global South and the Global North.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Italian <em>straniero<\/em>, the Portuguese\u00a0<em>estrangeiro<\/em>, the French\u00a0<em>e\u0301tranger<\/em>, and the Spanish\u00a0<em>extranjero<\/em>, are all etymologically connected to the\u00a0<em>strano<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>estranho<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>e\u0301trange<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>extran\u0303o<\/em>, respectively, which is precisely the stranger. Sigmund Freud\u2019s\u00a0<em>Das Unheimliche<\/em>\u00a0comes to mind\u2014<em>The Uncanny<\/em>\u00a0in English, which in Portuguese has indeed been translated as \u201c<em>o estranho<\/em>\u201d\u2013 the strange that is also familiar, within, deep down side. According to the\u00a0<em>American Heritage<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>Oxford Dictionaries<\/em>, the first meaning of the word \u201cqueer\u201d is precisely \u201cstrange\u201d, and thus the Exhibition unfolds and focuses on the production of other related subjects:\u00a0<strong>the queer artist<\/strong>, who has moved within different sexualities and genders, often being persecuted or outlawed;\u00a0<strong>the outsider artist<\/strong>, who is located at the margins of the art world, much like the self-taught artist,\u00a0<strong>the folk artist<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>artista popular<\/em>;\u00a0<strong>the indigenous artist<\/strong>, frequently treated as a foreigner in his or her own land. The productions of these four subjects are the interest of this Biennale, constituting the\u00a0<em>Nucleo Contemporaneo<\/em>. [&#8230;] The International Exhibition will also feature a\u00a0<em>Nucleo Storico<\/em>\u00a0gathering works from 20<sup>th<\/sup> century Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. [&#8230;] A third room in the\u00a0<em>Nucleo Storico<\/em>\u00a0is dedicated to the worldwide Italian artistic diaspora in the 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century: Italian artists who travelled and moved abroad developing their careers in Africa, Asia, Latin America, as well as in the rest of Europe and the United States, becoming embedded in local cultures\u2014and who often played significant roles in the development of the narratives of modernism beyond Italy.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018La Biennale itself, as an international event with so many official participations by numerous different countries, has always been a platform for the exhibition of works of foreigners from all over the world.
