Competition
On 16 September 2019, at the Zachęta — National Gallery of Art, the Jury convened to review submissions for the curatorial project of the Polish Pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2020. The Jury, appointed by Prof. Piotr Gliński, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and National Heritage, issued the following statement:
Jury: Mateusz Adamkowski, Jerzy Bogusławski, David Crowley (absent), Marta Karpińska, Aleksandra Kędziorek, Agnieszka Komar-Morawska, Małgorzata Kuciewicz, Natalia Paszkowska, Andrzej Piotrowski, Bolesław Stelmach, Andrzej Szczerski, Gabriela Świtek, Piotr Walkowiak, Tomasz Wendland, Hanna Wróblewska.
After a lengthy discussion, the Jury selected the project by the curatorial collective PROLOG +1 (Mirabela Jurczenko, Bartosz Kowal, Wojciech Mazan, Bartłomiej Poteralski, Rafał Śliwa, Robert Witczak), entitled What Is Familiar Is Not Necessarily Understood: A Countryside, Forms of Dwelling and Production. The jury emphasised the project’s exploration of the potential of rural areas and the challenges stemming from the organisation of postsocialist Eastern European villages, including the repercussions of forced collectivisation. The project contributes to the broader discourse on the urbanisation of rural areas by introducing a perspective from a country where rural areas constitute 93% of the territory. Furthermore, it asks about the future, communal nature of life and work in the countryside. The Reserve Project was Postlinear Continuous System, curated by Agnieszka Tarasiuk with the participation of Szymon Rogiński.
