Call for Papers. The History of Exhibitions at the Polish Pavilion in Venice (1993–2026)

Zachęta – National Gallery of Art announces a call for abstracts for a forthcoming publication on the history of exhibitions at the Polish Pavilion during the International Art Exhibition and International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in 1993–2026.

This will be an extensive publication to cover over three decades of Poland’s contributions to the Biennale. Its aim is to document and to critically analyse the transformations that have taken place in modes of representing Polish art and architecture, in terms of shifting artistic, social, political, and institutional contexts.

We are planning to divide the book into two parts:

• – an extensive timeline, organising the history of the exhibitions at the Polish Pavilion in 1993–2026;
• – a selection of writings by the authors either invited or selected from the open call.

We encourage submissions that address such topics as:

• – the history of exhibitions at the Polish Pavilion;
• – the social and political history of Poland’s contributions to the Biennale in Venice;
• – the curatorial, institutional, and organisational aspects of Poland’s participation in the Art Biennale and Architecture Biennale in Venice;
• – analyses of particular exhibitions, designs, the featured artists, architects, and curators;
• – issues of representation, cultural policy, cultural diplomacy and the international circuit of art and architecture;
• – the impact of the Biennale in Venice on the international art circuit;
• – other research approaches concerning the history of the Polish Pavilion, or more broadly, the participation of Polish citizens (artists and curators) at the Biennale in Venice in 1993–2026.

Our invitation especially goes out to scholars in such fields as art history, architecture history, cultural studies, social studies, political studies, anthropology, exhibition studies, and related disciplines, as well as independent researchers into the history of Poland’s presence at the Biennale.

• – an abstract for the planned article, up to 1,800 characters with spaces (one page),
• – a brief academic or professional bio, including a list of publications from the past five years,

Selected authors will be invited to prepare full articles for the publication (around 15–20,000 characters with spaces, including bibliography). Authors will be informed individually about the outcome of the call for papers. Authors will be remunerated for articles selected for the book. The publication will be reviewed. Projected deadline for completing articles: 30 March 2027.
